MOTU has unveiled the MOTU Symphonic Instrument, a multi-platform plug-in instrument that provides quick and easy access to the company's 8Gb library of quality orchestral sounds for composing, sequencing and voicing a full orchestra. MOTU Symphonic Instrument is compatible with most sequencers (VST, Audio Unit, DXi, MAS and RTAS), with up to 16 different instruments per plug-in instance, for ensembles of any size and scope. The built-in convolution reverb allows users to place the orchestra in authentic acoustic spaces, from the orchestra recording room to prestigious concert halls and majestic cathedrals. The quick-access controls allow the user to make fine adjustments to each instrument to achieve the perfect sound. Sounds can also be loaded into the universal MOTU MachFive virtual sampler for more advanced layering and programming options.

The plug-in

The MOTU Symphonic Instrument offers 16 multitimbral parts, via the instrument list on the left side of the window. The user chooses an instrument for each slot, and assigns a MIDI channel. To play the same notes on two instruments, it is sufficient to assign the instruments to the same MIDI channel. On the other hand, instruments to be played separately can be assigned to different MIDI channels. The controls to the right of the instrument list allow you to adjust the sound of the selected instrument, including the ADSR envelope on amplitude, an LFO, two filters, tone controls, pitch and velocity response. Global parameters, such as polyphony and global volume and panning, are accessible on the top section of the main window. Finally, the lower section of the window displays the convolution reverb controls, with a menu for accessing acoustic spaces, and seven knobs for fine control of the sound in space. The MOTU Symphonic Instrument takes advantage of the world-renowned 32-bit UVI engine for precision and power.

The sounds

From solo instruments and small ensembles to large orchestras and choirs, the MOTU Symphonic Instrument's massive 8 gig library offers high fidelity, high detail orchestral and musical sounds. Quality and variety abound: strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, men's and women's choirs, organs, period instruments and pianos, plus classics including Steinway D and Yamaha C7. Acoustic Spaces

Convolution is a process that captures, or "records" the acoustic characteristics of a space, and then faithfully reproduces them down to the smallest detail. Convolution reverbs are known for their stunning realism and are considered the best and most affordable type of reverb. The user can choose from a wide variety of acoustic spaces included in the MOTU Symphonic Instrument to add realism to orchestral sounds. The reverb library contains chamber spaces, concert halls, and majestic cathedrals, among others.

Compatibility in MachFive

If the user prefers the more advanced and flexible environment offered by MachFive, MOTU's universal virtual sampler, they can freely load MOTU Symphonic Instrument sounds into MachFive for more complete layers, splits and stacks.
